Key takeaways:

  • Surgical education has a steep learning curve for retina fellows.
  • Teaching fellows to feel comfortable in the OR will help prepare them for complex procedures.

In this Healio Video Perspective from the Vit-Buckle Society annual meeting, Michelle Liang, MD, shares pearls on how retina specialists can help fellows feel comfortable in the OR.

According to Liang, it is important to educate fellows in a variety of areas, including preoperative positioning and preparation, proper posture and the necessity of good visualization.

“It’s a really challenging and rewarding experience to work with fellows,” she said. “We really want to make sure that they are comfortable and prepared in the operating room, and we want to be able to help them anticipate and manage complications. It’s an ever-changing environment in retina, and we are all really just learning how to adapt.”
