Key takeaways:

  • A panel at the Vit-Buckle Society meeting highlighted stories from LGBTQ physicians.
  • Panelists included Dan S. Churgin, MD, Cassie A. Ludwig, MD, MS, Steven Sanislo, MD, and Scott D. Walter, MD, MSc.

In this Healio Video Perspective from the Vit-Buckle Society annual meeting, Vivienne S. Hau, MD, PhD, discusses a panel exploring the experiences of LGBTQ physicians.

According to a questionnaire from the Association of American Medical Colleges, Hau said, 3.6% of all first-year medical students identified as LGBTQ in 2022. This translates to roughly 600 future residents, future fellows, future physicians and future colleagues.

“I hope sharing our stories might change people’s minds through changing their hearts, by connecting with them and helping them understand that we are more alike than we are different. We can finally improve the state of our field today so it can be better not just for certain individuals but for everyone,” Hau said.
