KOLOA, Hawaii — Having a designated space and having time to spend with patients are key when building an aesthetics practice, Benjamin Burt, MD, said in a presentation at Hawaiian Eye 2023.

“To do it well, you really need a special space,” Burt said. “It can be in the same clinic, but you need somewhere where people feel relaxed.”

Sound and lighting also take on importance when building an area for cosmetic procedures, and physicians can look to spas and high-end salons for ideas.

Nonsurgical cosmetic patients return because of their experience with the physician and their results, Burt said.

“I enjoy hearing about the way people feel about their appearance, but you need to take time to do that,” he said. “Get a mirror, sit next to the patient, and don't be on the other side of the desk.”

While focusing on details such as taking careful measurements and documentation is important when building a practice, creativity is also needed when finding ways to attract patients. Friends as well as friends of friends are useful when beginning a practice, he said.

A reputation is like a good virus, Burt said. “You spread your reputation through people you operate on.”

“Word of mouth is so powerful,” panelist Femida Kherani, MD, said, commenting on Burt’s presentation. “[It is] more powerful in my practice than any ad.”
