Employee empowerment is key for a practice to thrive. This is achieved by providing consistent training and education, by facilitating career paths and by creating a great office culture, according to one presenter.

“Your training program needs to be consistent and efficient and provide individual accountability,” Mitchell C. Shultz, MD, said at Real World Ophthalmology.

Staff education and team training have a tangible impact on quality and on patient satisfaction and engagement.

“Remember that you are only as good as the weakest person in your team. Patients are physician-extenders, and gaining their trust will help you grow your practice,” Shultz said.

Employees need to know that they can progress in their career and financial well-being.

“Create opportunities for your team’s upward mobility. It is really important for people to know that there are mechanisms for progressing from entry level to advanced level of income, skill and professional growth. Establish pathways to certifications and promotions, and have a reward system as a tangible milestone structure,” Shultz said.

A great office culture supports involvement and promotes joy, passion and motivation. It is important to meet employees on a regular basis, to share values and goals with them, and to encourage straightforward communication by being receptive to their ideas, needs and problems. Opportunities to gather, celebrate and bond over happy hours help bring the team together.

“Collective commitment and positive energy in the office will lead to success,” Shultz said.
