WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, presented an introspective look at his time in the ophthalmology field, as well as his work with Healio/Ocular Surgery News, at Hawaiian Eye 2022.

Richard L. Lindstrom

Lindstrom gave a quick history of his career, which began at the University of Minnesota in 1969. From there, in 1989, Lindstrom began his own practice.

“We started with six employees and a fellow,” he said. “Now, we are in the range of 35 doctors and 400 employees and a lot more management issues.”

This past year, after turning 75, Lindstrom stepped away from the OR after 45 years of surgical practice.

When asked what he was most proud of after a long career, Lindstrom recognized his fellows, some who were present at the meeting.

“I was a fellow in 1978,” he said. “One day I was a fellow, and the next day I was training fellows. There [are] 75 of them out there in the world.”

Lindstrom then spoke about the first Hawaiian Eye meeting he attended. Peter Slack, now president and CEO of The Wyanoke Group, the parent company of Healio, approached Lindstrom and informed him of a new publication he was starting, IOL Today.

“And that is what has evolved to Healio/Ocular Surgery News today,” Lindstrom said. “I started out as a founding member on the editorial board, then became Associate Medical Editor and then Chief Medical Editor.”

Lindstrom offered thanks and appreciation to those who continue to organize the Hawaiian Eye meeting each year.

“It’s been a real blessing to me to have 40 years working with The Wyanoke Group,” he said. “Certainly, the word for me this week is grateful. I’m really grateful that I found my way to ophthalmology. All of you in this room that are ophthalmologists are blessed. We really have a wonderful specialty.”
