Bilateral implantation of the Tecnis Synergy IOL showed “very good” outcomes at all distances at 3 months of follow-up.
The study, currently ongoing at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, was presented in a poster at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting by Ramin Khoramnia, MD, and co-authors. It included 28 patients who underwent refractive lens exchange with bilateral implantation of Synergy (Johnson & Johnson Vision), a diffractive continuous range of vision IOL that combines bifocal and extended depth of focus technologies.
Patients underwent visual acuity testing at all distances, as well as defocus curve testing and measurement of contrast sensitivity in mesopic and photopic conditions. In addition, using the Salzburg Reading Desk, all eyes were examined preoperatively and postoperatively at subjectively preferred and set near (40 cm) and intermediate (80 cm) distance.
“Very good” results were reported for uncorrected and distance corrected visual acuity testing at far, intermediate and near. Mean binocular uncorrected logMAR acuity was –0.05 at distance, –0.07 at intermediate and 0.00 at near. These results were confirmed by defocus curve testing, showing visual acuity of 0.1 logMAR or better from +0.75 D to –3 D.
Reading acuity measured with the Salzburg Reading Desk was also very good.
“Patients preferred a nearer distance, but reading performance was comparable for the subjectively preferred and set distances,” the authors wrote.
Photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivities were within the normal range, and photic phenomena were comparable to those reported for diffractive trifocal IOLs, “as expected for diffractive lens designs,” the authors wrote.
