Alcon reported $2.1 billion in worldwide sales in the second quarter of 2021, an increase of 75% on a reported basis compared with the same period of 2020, according to a press release.

In the first half of the year, Alcon totaled $4 billion in sales compared with $3 billion in the first half of 2020.

Quarterly surgical sales, including implantables, consumables and equipment, totaled $1.2 billion compared with $602 million in the same period of 2020. Vision care sales, including ocular health and contact lens sectors, totaled $888 million in sales compared with $596 million a year ago.

“We had a terrific second quarter. I want to thank the team at Alcon all over the world for what turned out to be a really excellent performance on a revenue basis,” David Endicott, CEO of Alcon, told Healio/OSN.

“I think the great news for us, and I think for you, is that procedures in the United States bounced back a lot. I think what we saw was a strong United States return of the market against a mixed international return,” he said.

Alcon’s operating income was $229 million in the second quarter of 2021 and $378 million in the first half of 2021 compared with operating losses of $466 million in the second quarter of 2020 and $494 million in the first half of 2020, attributed to COVID-19-related issues.
