One-year outcomes show 'excellent' performance of fluid-optic IOL at all distances

One-year results show that the Juvene fluid-optic IOL succeeds in providing stable, full range of vision from distance through near, according to a study.
“Of note, there is very little or no glare and halo with this lens,” Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, said at the virtual American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting.
Juvene (LensGen) is a new-concept accommodating IOL that integrates a base lens supported by capsule-filling circumferential haptics and a fluid-optic, curvature-changing lens that allows for continuous range of vision, distance to near. The two lenses can be implanted through a small incision.
In a 12-month study, 45 eyes were followed for monocular data, and 14 patients were followed for binocular data.
“Monocular results show that all patients had excellent distance visual acuity, 20/25 at least. Intermediate was also excellent, with over 95% achieving 20/25. At near, DCNV was 20/32 for half of the patients, and the great majority achieved 20/40 VA,” Donnenfeld said.
Bilateral implantation provided improved vision at all distances, suggesting binocular summation. Mean best corrected distance vision and intermediate vision were 20/20, and near was 20/32 or better, with almost all patients achieving vision at all three distances.
Defocus curves supported the previous data in all 45 eyes, showing no peaks and troughs but a relatively flat and stable shelf.
“When we look at the binocular defocus curve of 14 patients, we can see that binocular summation does occur, and it is not due to a monovision effect. Distance vision was better than 20/20, intermediate was 20/25, and near was better than 20/40,” Donnenfeld said.
