As the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic continues, an increasing number of eye specialists are seeing and reporting on ocular manifestations potentially related to COVID-19.

However, the true prevalence and clinical impact remain unknown.

Conjunctivitis, uveitis and episcleritis, in addition to subtle retinal changes, have been described in patients with COVID-19, and more manifestations are expected to emerge in the future.

According to Jorge L. Alió, MD, PhD, what has been seen so far is only the tip of the iceberg because confinement restrictions and the delay of nonessential procedures have kept many patients away from ophthalmic care.

“With time and with more data, we might be able to better clarify the relevance, frequency and causative mechanisms of these manifestations. It may be direct contact of the virus with the eye in some cases or a consequence of the inflammatory and immune-dysregulation processes triggered by the virus in the body,” he told Healio/OSN.

With nonconditional sponsorship from Thea Pharma, Alió is launching a survey to collect evidence on how COVID-19 affects the eye.
