On May 6, 2012, OSN columnist John Pinto launched “Voyage to EHR,” a month-long solo sail from San Diego to Honolulu aboard 24-foot “Aurelia” sponsored by Ocular Surgery News and Compulink. Aloha from Aurelia at 32 degrees (audio fades out), 118 degrees 11 minutes west, at 7:30 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.
Everything about a sea voyage revolves around the weather. Winds have now become extremely light, and Aurelia has been steaming along largely on her diesel auxiliary engine for the past 12 hours.
Total expected distance traveled for the first 24 hours will be under 70 nautical miles, well under Aurelia’s 100 nautical mile average (fades out) south and west in search of a wind.
Meanwhile, ship’s company is in good cheer. Hope all are enjoying the start of another workweek. If I could snap my fingers and trade places with you right now, I’d do it in an instant. This kind of sailing is the hardest kind of work.
John’s voyage is meant to raise awareness of the similar “expedition” surgeons undertake when converting to electronic health records and will also support the work of the Hawaiian Eye Foundation.
