Aloha from Aurelia, at 27 degrees, 11 minutes north, and 127 degrees, 50 minutes west. We hope you’re having the start of a great week.
There are about 8 distinct noises issued by Aurelia’s instruments located throughout the vessel. There’s a blaring high-water alarm, a buzzer every time the bilge pump turns on, along with an alarm for shipping traffic spotted by the radar system, several low-battery alarms, and a quiet dinger that goes off every time the apparent wind falls below 10 knots.
In any given 24-hour period, you only hear 1 alarm, perhaps 2. But when 2 or more go off, and especially when they wake up the skipper during a midnight power nap, it can be a bit disorienting for the first few minutes. [Unclear] …Make it a great day there.
All things considered, I’d rather be attending to my offshore alarms today than the phones, the faxes, the emails and all the rest of shore side business alarms.
P.S. We officially passed the one-quarter mark at noon yesterday, on Sunday. Just 1,800 nautical miles or so left to go. Zoom, zoom.
