Patient motivation, adaptability crucial for
presbyopia correction
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. — The key ingredients to successful presbyopia correction may be a patient's drive and flexibility, according to a presenter here.
"For me, in presbyopia correcting, the most important thing is [that] patients be motivated and adaptable," Brad Black, MD, said at Kiawah Eye 2011. In addition to having relatively healthy eyes, patients must be willing to learn how to use their new lenses and to ignore minimal adverse effects such as halos or glare, according to Dr. Black.
For patients who have never had cylinder correction or worn glasses, toric lenses offer a significant advancement and may now correct up to 4 D of corneal cylinder, he said.
"In our practice, and I think in most practices throughout the country, the diffractive multifocal lens is becoming the lens of choice for the treatment of presbyopia. To the tune of about 75% of the lenses put in are diffractive lenses," Dr. Black said, noting that the AcrySof ReSTOR (Alcon) and the multifocal diffractive lens from Tecnis (Abbott Medical Optics) are widely used.
