PHILADELPHIA — Organizers of the American Transplant Congress announced award winners in transplantation research and achievements, including the Pioneer Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The awards were presented here on behalf of the American Society of Transplantation (AST), American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) and the American Journal of Transplantation.
“In each of the respective achievement awards, grant programs and article awards, [American Transplant Congress] ATC 2024 recognized transplantation experts, students and scholars for their impact on the field as well as their influential and promising research to continue advancing innovation in transplantation,” the according to an ATC press release.
For AST’s Achievement Awards, the society recognized 15 recipients for achievements and contributions to the organization and the field of transplantation.
Allan Kirk, MD, PhD, FACS, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, AST’s highest honor.
The AST also recognized Valen Keefer with the Transplant Advocacy Award; Belinda Paganafanador, BSN, MBA, MS, BS, with the Advancing Advocacy in Organ Transplantation Award; Peter Heeger, MD, with the Mentoring Award; Lara Danziger-Isakov, MD, MPH, with the Physician of Distinction Award; Michael Ison, MD, MS, with the Senior Achievement in Clinical Transplantation Award; Daniel Kreisel, MD, PhD, with the Basic Science Established Investigator Award; Jamil Azzi, MD, PhD, and Leonardo Riella, MD, PhD, with the Basic Science Investigator Award; Thiago Borges, PhD, with the Basic Career Science Development Award; Jennifer Lai, MD, MBA, and Lisa Potter, PharmD, BCTXP, BCPS, FCCP, FAST, with the Clinical Science Established Investigator Award; Joelle Nelson, PharmD, BCPS, BCTXP, FAST, with the Distinguished Senior Career Award and Kayla Joyal, PharmD, with the Distinguished Early Career Award.
ASTS awarded Igal Kam, MD, the Pioneer Award for his achievements in transplantation. Additionally, the ASTS Foundation announced winners of 20 grants ranging from $5,000 to $200,000 to students, professors, physicians and researchers. The grants, which total $1.02 million, include support from member sponsors and funding partners Gift of Life, Takeda, TransMedics and Veloxis.
Grant recipients included Maya Clark-Cutaia, PhD, ACNP-BC, and Lisa Coscia, RN, BSN, CCTC, FAST (Advanced Transplant Provider Research); Joel Adler, MD, MPH (Collaborative Scientist); Steven Kim, MD (Faculty Development); Imad Aljabban, MD (Jon Fryer Resident Scientist Scholarship); Chris Seung (Presidential Student Mentor); Tran Ngo, Julia Bruner, Pranay Singh, Brendan Lohmar, Alexander Nguyen, Joshua Kettelkamp and Zachary Kaplan (Presidential Student Mentor - ASTS member funded); Jonathan Merola, MD, PhD (Ronald & JoAnn Busuttil Surgeon Scientist Scholarship); Pedro Rodrigo Sandoval, MD (Gift of Life Socio Economic and Racial Disparity); Nassir Thalji, PhD (Takeda Socio Economic and Racial Disparity); Blayne Sayed, MD, PhD (TransMedics Faculty Perfusion); Elaina Weldon, MSN, ACNP-BC (Veloxis Advanced Transplant Provider Research), and Davide Cina, MD, PhD (Veloxis Fellowship in Transplantation).
American Journal of Transplantation honored three authors for its Outstanding Authors Award in basic science, translational science and clinical research, including Maria-Luisa Alegre, MD, PhD; David A. Hildeman and E. Steve Woodle, MD, and Joel T. Adler, MD, MPH.
