“Dr. Smith’s career has been defined by the relentless pursuit of excellence,” Edward V. Hickey III, American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) president, U.S. Marine Corps veteran and chair of the AAKP Veterans Heath Initiative, said in a press release. “His unwavering optimism about the future of medicine is grounded in a clear-eyed understanding of how lives can be saved and societies improved when research, science, innovation and patient care choice and access to new treatments are allowed to flourish without senseless interference.”

The medal of excellence marks one of the highest honors for professionals in kidney care, according to the release. The award recognizes local, national and international specialists who advocate for patient care choice, integrity in the patient-doctor relationship and better development and access to kidney care improvements.

Smith previously served as deputy chief of surgical neurology at the NIH, president and CEO of the Rogosin Institute, and director of the Dreyfus Health Foundation in New York.

Smith is the co-editor of a health care book, author of more than 150 peer-reviewed medical articles and a member of the AAKP national board of directors.

“On behalf of AAKP, we express our sincere gratitude to our strong allies at the Renal Physicians Association for inviting us to present this award during their very important anniversary meeting, and we are proud of our shared legacy of honoring physician excellence at RPA events since 1996,” Hickey said.
