Key takeaways:
- New reimbursement limit for travel and dependent care goes from $5,000 to $6,000.
- The funding will also cover care expenses for dependents of the donor.
The National Kidney Registry will expand its Donor Shield program to increase maximum travel and dependent care reimbursements by $1,000.
The reimbursement limit will raise from $5,000 to $6,000 per donor, and applies to travel, lodging and meal expenses related to kidney donation for the donor and a caregiver.
“We are thrilled to offer [National Kidney Registry] NKR donors additional reimbursement opportunities through the comprehensive Donor Shield program,” Michael Lollo, chief strategy officer of the NKR and living kidney donor, said in a press release. “With the increased allowance ... and the addition of meals to the covered expenses, Donor Shield has eliminated, to the maximum extent possible, all disincentives to living donation.”
The funding will also cover care expenses for dependents of the donor.
With this increase, the total Donor Shield maximum reimbursement is now $18,000 per donor, the NKR noted in the release. That includes up to $12,000 for lost-wage reimbursement and up to $6,000 for travel and dependent care.
“Living donors are performing an amazingly generous act in giving someone the gift of health and longer life, and we want to ensure they are not burdened with any costs in the process of giving that gift,” Garet Hil, founder and CEO of the NKR and living kidney donor, said in the release. “Not only is it the right thing to do for living donors but it also increases the number of potential donors because it eliminates barriers that would historically prevent someone from donating a kidney.”
Anyone who donates starting Nov. 1 is eligible for the increased Donor Shield travel and dependent care maximum reimbursement, according to the release.
