Key takeaways:
- The American Kidney Fund is including events for children with cystinosis at its camp.
- The camp meets monthly.
This year, the national virtual camp hosted by the American Kidney Fund will include a program specifically for children with cystinosis.
According to the AKF website, the camp is hosted monthly for children and teenagers with kidney disease. Events include bingo, art night, gingerbread decorating and other bonding activities.
"AKF is honored to host these virtual camps and give children with kidney disease the opportunity to enjoy themselves and connect with other children who are managing similar challenges,” LaVarne A. Burton, president and CEO of AKF, said in the release.
“Having just recognized World Cystinosis Day on May 7, we're so pleased to announce this special opportunity for kids with cystinosis.”
In addition to the usual schedule, the camp will host two 1-hour networking programs for campers with cystinosis to allow for shared experiences and friendships to be made. This year, up to 20 children with cystinosis will be attending the camp.
"Kidney disease can feel all-consuming, which often prevents many children with the disease from being able to relax, have fun and just enjoy being a kid," Burton said.
