With May serving as National Nurses Month, Healio has collected the top stories in nephrology that discuss the challenges faced by nurses who treat patients with kidney disease.
In a presentation at the Nephrology Nursing Practice Management and Leadership Conference, Ernest J. Grant, PhD, RN, FAAN, discussed the stress nurses have undergone recently that has led to a staffing shortage. “ ... We have seen a tremendous increase in the concern about nurses’ mental health and well-being over the last 2 years,” he said.
Another top story reported on the shortage of nurse educators that is currently contributing to the small number of nursing school students in America. Without enough educators, students are being turned away from schools. “ ... Pre-COVID-19, there was already a serious concern as to whether the profession was going to be able to attract enough nurses to care for populations, and that also includes the [end-stage renal disease] ESRD population, the [chronic kidney disease] CKD population, moving into the future,” Kathleen Belmonte, MS, RN-CS, MBA, said.
