Key takeaways:

  • Changes have been made to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.
  • Nephrologists receive a 1% pay increase.

NEW ORLEANS — In this interview from the Renal Physicians Association Annual Meeting, Robert Blaser discusses changes to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule for 2023.

Even with a 4.4% reduction in the conversion factor to $33.06, due to the federal government’s budget neutrality rules, the $1.55 drop was somewhat diminished by an increase in the value of services provided by nephrologists according to Medicare claims data.

The result is an increase in Medicare physician pay to nephrologists by 1% for 2023.

“That is due to the typical service mix that most nephrology practices typically provide ... and it is probably due to increases in pay for [evaluation and management] services that out factor, if you will, the cut in the conversion factor,” Blaser said.
