ORLANDO — In this video from ASN Kidney Week, Michael Aragon, MD, the chief medical officer of Outset Medical, discusses human factor validation of the Tablo Hemodialysis System with health care professionals.

“The Tablo Hemodialysis System is indicated for acute, chronic and home use,” Aragon told Healio. “In this study, we evaluated the interaction between professional health care providers and the device in a simulated use setting.”

The simulation included a clinic in which 15 health care professionals (HCPs,) including nine registered nurses and six dialysis technicians, underwent a 3-hour training and then tested the Tablo. Testing included setup, takedown, monitoring, routine maintenance and alarm resolution, and HCPs were measured based on task performance. Additionally, HCPs detailed errors, close calls and difficulties in interviews.

The HCPs performed a total of 7,365 tasks with a user error rate of less than 1%. Most errors were associated with manual blood return. All HCPS reported that they could use the Tablo safely and effectively.

As Healio previously reported, patients on hemodialysis also found the Tablo easy to learn and use at home. Patients completed more than 5,400 tasks with a user error rate of 0.9%.
