ORLANDO — In this video from ASN Kidney Week, Cynthia D'Alessandri-Silva, MD, discusses supply chain innovations for physicians and patients from the perspective of Outset Medical.

In a retrospective analysis of supply chain metrics, researchers observed on-time delivery, inventory, allocation events and overall parts shipped. Between March and April of 2020, Outset implemented three strategies to improve risk analysis, upstream sourcing and logistics management. Further, to improve risk analysis, the company invested in software analytics and artificial intelligence. As for logistics, Outset partnered with third-party distributors to allow for more transport options.

“This insourcing allowed us to meet the demands of many patients on dialysis,” Silva told Healio.

Between December 2020 and December 2021, total treatments delivered increased by 125%, D'Alessandri-Silva said.

“We met 98% of our treatment demand on time and were able to double treatment at the height of the pandemic,” D'Alessandri-Silva told Healio. “I think it’s a unique example of how Outset meets the needs of what’s going on in the market while keeping patient care at the center of what we do.”
