The American Kidney Fund announced a new campaign called Looped in on Lupus Nephritis that is designed to improve diagnosis, awareness and equitable treatment of the disease among patients.

According to a press release, the campaign “provides audience-centric, culturally appropriate information about the causes, symptoms, disease management and available treatments for lupus nephritis.”

As most patients with lupus are women, Black women are most affected by the lupus nephritis, and Black, Hispanic and Asian Americans are more likely than white Americans to have the condition, the release noted that the campaign will provide women with lupus in underrepresented groups with tools and knowledge to manage their symptoms. Throughout 2022, Looped in on Lupus Nephritis will roll out different educational guides and resources, such as an interactive quiz that tests users on the disease and a video series of women discussing their experiences with the disease.

“Longstanding health disparities and social determinants of health have contributed poor outcomes for marginalized communities in this country. We know that far too many Americans are not getting the comprehensive health care and resources they need to successfully manage kidney disease and its comorbidities, including lupus,” LaVarne A. Burton, president and CEO of the AKF, said in the release. “Our Looped In on Lupus Nephritis campaign has been developed to support Black and other women of color in understanding the impact that lupus can have on their lives and kidneys, and equip them with resources to get the care they deserve.”
