What drew me to infectious diseases was the potentially enormous impact it has — not only on individuals but on societies.
If you look at the history of the world and what infectious diseases have done, they’ve actually shaped civilizations, as a matter of fact. Now, in the modern day, the excitement about infectious diseases is with diseases that you can identify, you can prevent and you can treat.
If you’re a person like myself who is action oriented and wants to get results, it’s a subspecialty that has all of that. It has acuteness to it. It has the potential for prevention. It has the potential for treatment. All of those things are very attractive to me.
