CDC: Immunocompromised adults may get fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccine

Immunocompromised adults who have received a third shot of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine are eligible for a fourth dose 6 months later, the CDC said in updated guidance.

According to the guidance posted on the CDC website, people aged 18 years or older who are “moderately [or] severely immunocompromised” and who have received three doses of either one of the widely used messenger RNA vaccines may get a booster dose of those vaccines, or the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The FDA authorized third doses of the mRNA vaccines for immunocompromised patients in August, which were then recommended by the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) in a unanimous vote.

All three vaccines have since been authorized as boosters. Americans are allowed to choose their own booster shot under a “mix and match” strategy authorized by the FDA.
