Monday marks the 10th annual World Sepsis Day, an initiative established in 2012 by the nonprofit Global Sepsis Alliance to raise awareness of sepsis, which kills at least 11 million people each year worldwide.

According to the CDC, one out of every three patients who dies in a hospital in the United States has sepsis. The condition affects at least 1.7 million American adults each year, killing nearly 270,000, yet many people are unaware of it.
