IDWeek organizers announced that the 2021 meeting will be entirely virtual again because of the continued presence of COVID-19 and related restrictions.

The announcement was made Friday by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, HIV Medicine Association, Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, and Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists.

It will be the second year in a row that the conference will be a completely virtual event. It is scheduled for Sept. 29 to Oct. 3 and would have been held in San Diego.

“Clearly the uncertainty about the availability of the convention center with the announcement that it will be used for immigration housing, together with the ongoing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic, including the growing recognition of variants, will prevent attendees from traveling to the meeting,” said Infectious Disease News Editorial Board Member Carlos del Rio, MD, the IDSA vice president and executive associate dean at the Emory University School of Medicine.

Organizers said they plan to implement more ways to connect with attendees, speakers and presenters through a “robust platform for learning, collaboration and networking,” building on the success of the virtual 2020 conference, which they say drew more than 10,500 attendees from around the world.
