A high percentage of people with cancer exhibit what are known as SPPADE symptoms, according to study results.

Investigators interviewed 31,886 people with cancer and assessed them for these symptoms, which include sleep disturbance, pain, physical function impairment, anxiety, depression, and low energy or fatigue.

Prevalence of individual symptoms ranged from 17.5% to 34.5%, according to findings published in journal of Pain and Symptom Management.

They often were co-occurring, with the proportion of patients exhibiting three or more relevant symptoms ranging from 45.2% to 68.6%, researchers found.

The findings suggest clinical approaches to improve symptom detection and management are necessary, Kurt Kroenke, MD, research scientist at Regenstrief Institute and physician at Indiana University School of Medicine, and colleagues concluded.

Healio spoke with Kroenke about the findings and their potential implications.
