Umbilical cord blood an appropriate stem cell source for certain patients

In the second installment of a three-part video series, Heather Stefanski, MD, PhD, discusses the potential role of umbilical cord blood as a stem cell source.
“Ethnically diverse patients are appropriate candidates for umbilical cord blood because they don’t have to be perfectly matched, and the chance of getting graft-versus-host disease is less with umbilical cord blood,” Stefanski — vice president of medical services for National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match — told Healio.
Stefanski also shares the reasons why she used umbilical cord blood when she was treating patients with leukemia, as well as related guidelines developed by National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match and Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research.
