BOSTON – Christy S. Harris, PharmD, BCOP, FHOPA, presented on the treatment of adult sarcomas at Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association Annual Meeting.

Although guidelines haven’t changed much in recent years, there have been new approvals in the targeted setting, according to Harris, an associate professor of pharmacy practice at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and a clinical pharmacy specialist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

“We’ve had five new drugs between 2019 and 2021. That’s the most sarcomas have ever had, so this has been a really exciting time,” Harris told Healio in a video interview. “But they’re each targeting a specific mutation that effects one of over a hundred subtypes of sarcoma, so it’s a very tedious process with a lot of people.”

Harris also discussed helping patients stay adherent to treatment by managing the side effects of drugs and the importance of patients receiving care at a large sarcoma specialty center with a multidisciplinary team.
