Fox Chase Cancer Center announces appointments

Fox Chase Cancer Center announced two faculty appointments.
Iberia Romina Sosa, MD, PhD, associate professor at the cancer center, has been appointed chief of the division of hematology.
“I feel truly privileged to have been offered this role, and to have the opportunity to work with such a talented group of faculty and staff in our hematology section,” Sosa said in a press release. “I look forward to growing our research portfolio by bringing exciting new studies that will meet the evolving clinical needs of our patients, as well as innovating new projects with our research colleagues in the cancer center.”
Sosa’s treatment focus is consultative hematology, specifically myeloproliferative disorders, bleeding/thrombosis and bone marrow failure.
“This appointment is a testimony to the skills that Dr. Sosa has and the hard work that she has put in over the last several years at Fox Chase,” Martin J. Edelman, MD, chair of the department of hematology/oncology, said in the press release. “Dr. Sosa has been a leader in both our clinical and research efforts in benign and malignant hematology.”
Margaret von Mehren, MD, chief of the division of sarcoma medical oncology, has been appointed vice chair of the department of hematology/oncology. Von Mehren has been a member of Fox Chase’s department of hematology and oncology since she started her fellowship in 1993.
“It is my privilege to work with and for our talented and committed faculty in the department,” von Mehren said in a press release.
Von Mehren also serves as associate director for clinical research, physician director of the clinical trials office, and member of the Cancer Epigenetics Institute at Fox Chase.
Her specialties include melanoma, skin cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, sarcoma and uterine sarcoma.
“Dr. von Mehren and I have worked together for almost 5 years. She exemplifies ‘quiet competence’ — that is to say evaluating problems, proposing solutions, and getting results without drama,” Edelman said. “I look forward to working with her in this new role as we continue to grow and expand the department.”
