ONS On-Demand supports competency development and growth
Oncology nurses are important members — often leaders — of the health care team, and they play a significant role providing holistic care to people with cancer.
Oncology nurses translate and interpret complex information to facilitate patient understanding and participation in shared decision-making for all aspects of cancer prevention, detection, treatment and survivorship.
There is rapid knowledge turnover in all aspects of cancer care; therefore, oncology nurses must keep pace via continuous professional development.
There has been rapid advancement in the diagnostics and treatment of cancer over the past several years. More than ever, a targeted approach is used to guide cancer treatment recommendations based on genetic makeup of the disease.
The ever-growing number of new FDA-approved drugs, biologics, indications and combinations of treatment modalities create the need for continual, updated education for oncology nurses. It is critical that nurses understand the mechanism of action, adverse effects and toxicities of these agents to improve patient care.
ONS On-Demand
Many oncology nurses and their employers value ONS educational resources as a source for evidence-based information to inform and guide clinical practice.
Nursing leaders often purchase courses for their staff to support continuous professional development goals, as well as competency development and growth.
ONS On-Demand — a new business-to-business content distribution platform — improves course purchase, assignment and utilization review for employers and offers efficient access to courses for staff members.
ONS offered a few purchase options for facilities, but each presented barriers to an ideal customer experience. ONS On-Demand enhances access to ONS educational offerings, considered the gold standard of oncology nursing evidence-based resources.
Data dashboards allow employers to track accreditation requirements and assign staff relevant courses, eliminating the need for staff use of voucher codes.
Data has never been more important than today. Course progress can provide cues to retention and orientation progress, which can be great data points for nurse managers and educators.
Nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) data often are required to maintain individual nursing licensure and to support organization accreditation application and renewal requirements. NCPD documentation is required by ANCC Magnet Recognition, The Joint Commission and Commission on Cancer requirements.
ONS On-Demand offers real-time reporting, reducing much of the manual work to document and report NCPD contact hours. The product team interviewed nurse managers and educators across the country to learn what system features were most important to them. We believe ONS On-Demand delivers these features, especially supporting documentation of NCPD earned.
All ONS learning activities are accessible through ONS On-Demand, including the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate Course, the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate Course, certification preparation courses and nurse navigator courses.
Feature offerings
More than 50 learner-centric ONS courses are available that can educate oncology nurses about the standards of high-quality cancer care delivery.
These include recently released learning activities that support the orientation of oncology nurses to the staff nurse and advanced practice roles.
The Oncology Nurse Orientation Program is intended to span the first few months of staff nurse orientation, presenting interactive content asynchronously with preceptor-led activities to support content application and skill development.
For those seeking an alternative to the Oncology Nurse Orientation Program, ONS offers its Foundations of Oncology Nursing Practice Bundle, which includes three interactive courses that explore how cancer forms, how it is treated, and how to safely administer chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
ONS also has redesigned and updated programming to support orientation and full immersion into practice. The four-course Essentials in Advanced Practice Cancer Care Bundle offers comprehensive fundamental knowledge of advanced practice cancer care, emphasizing treatment, symptom management and oncologic emergencies.
In addition to the core curriculum, the ONS library soon will include electives on advanced practice topics. These will include optimizing management of cancer treatments, gero-oncology, survivorship and professional practice for the advanced practice RN.
