Renuka Iyer, MD, received the Mark R. Clements Award for Vision, Innovation and Collaboration from the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.

The award recognizes Iyer’s contributions toward finding a cure for cholangiocarcinoma, a rare gastrointestinal cancer that develops in the bile duct. Approximately 10,000 cases are diagnosed annually in the United States.

Iyer is co-director of the Liver and Pancreas Tumor Center at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. She has served as medical adviser for Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation’s nursing advisory board for 5 years.

“[Iyer] championed passionately for nursing to achieve the nursing advisory board’s vision to improve the quality of life and care of [patients with cholangiocarcinoma],” Susan Acquisto, DNP, RN, NEA‐BC, immediate past chair of the foundation’s nursing advisory board, said in a press release. “Her inspiration, devotion and dedication in time and scientific knowledge was invaluable to our work for which we will be eternally grateful. Her impact will long live as this work continues to advance nursing scientific knowledge and improved patient care.”

Iyer is “an incredible asset” to Roswell Park and its patients, according to Gurkamal Chatta, MD, clinical chief of genitourinary medicine and interim co‐chair of medicine at the cancer center.

“She is not only extremely knowledgeable, but also approaches every patient with exceptional compassion and respect,” Chatta said in the release. “This acknowledgment of her leadership in the field is richly deserved.”
