ASCO Annual Meeting once again will follow an all-virtual format.

The society released a statement this morning indicating the “online-only experience” will be held June 4-8.

"The health and safety of our attendees, staff, and vendors remains ASCO’s top priority," Clifford A. Hudis, MD, FACP, FASCO, CEO of ASCO, told Healio. "Current best-case scenarios still only project about 50% of the population receiving the vaccine by June, making it clear that hosting this year’s meeting in person would not be possible."

Last year, ASCO officials decided in late March to shift the 2020 annual meeting’s scientific program to an all-virtual three-day conference.

The program, held May 29-31, drew record attendance. More than 42,700 attendees from 138 countries participated. The educational program, held in August, also was conducted virtually.

This year’s scientific and education programs will be held simultaneously.

Attendees will have live and on-demand access to research presentations and slides.

Hudis said ASCO anticipates returning to an in-person event next year in Chicago, with the option for virtual attendance.

"We intend to be back at McCormick Place with a great in-person experience in 2022, bolstered by the ability to reach and actively engage global audiences virtually at the same time," he told Healio. "A hybrid meeting format will provide a live, onsite event for those eager to engage face-to-face with their colleagues while also allowing attendees to learn from anywhere in the world if desired, creating a seamless experience for online and in-person attendees."
