Kashyap Patel, MD, has been elected president of Community Oncology Alliance, a nonprofit advocacy group that serves community oncology practices and their patients.
Patel, who served as vice president of the alliance in 2020, is a medical oncologist and CEO of Carolina Blood and Cancer Care. His 1-year term as president will begin Jan. 1.
“I am honored and humbled to serve community oncology patients and practices in the important role of COA president,” Patel said in a press release. “This is an exciting and challenging time for independent community oncology practices, with every day bringing new opportunities. The spirit of resilience, resourcefulness, and innovation that is at the very core of community oncology is what will ensure the continued success of our important work going forward.”
Patel is recognized for his expertise in value-based care. He played a key role in helping his practice implement multiple oncology payment pilots. His other focus areas have included racial and ethnic disparities, health care policy and end-of-life care.
Patel intends to focus on identifying health care disparities in oncology, expanding education about biosimilars, ensuring incorporation of precision medicine into treatment, and identifying strategies to help more community oncologists participate in clinical trials.
