Charles Brenner, PhD, has joined City of Hope as chair of the institution’s new department of diabetes and cancer metabolism.

Brenner will focus on metabolic disturbances that underlie cancer, diabetes and their complications. He also will recruit other faculty members whose work relates to the relationship between cancer and diabetes.

Brenner is known for his expertise in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, the central catalyst of metabolic processes.

He served as chair and head of the department of biochemistry at The University of Iowa for the past 11 years. He previously held leadership and faculty positions at Dartmouth College and Thomas Jefferson University.

“Dr. Brenner possesses a scientific perspective that is not focused on one disease or cell type and instead stretches broadly across metabolic functions in both health and disease,” Debbie C. Thurmond, PhD, deputy director of City of Hope’s Diabetes & Research Metabolism Institute, said in a press release. “Dr. Brenner’s interdisciplinary research and vision will greatly benefit City of Hope as our diabetes and cancer physicians and scientists work together to understand how these diseases impact each other and to find better therapies for both diseases.”

Brenner said the new department will play a valuable role in helping physicians and scientists conduct collaborative research to identify new therapies that target cancer, metabolic disease, inflammation and infection.

“City of Hope is the ideal place to do this work, thanks to its strengths in cancer and diabetes, and its interdisciplinary and collaborative spirit,” Brenner said in the release.
