Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center announced several appointments.
Sergio A. Giralt, MD, chief of the adult bone marrow transplant service and chair in multiple myeloma, has been named deputy division head of the division of hematologic malignancies.
In this role, he will coordinate transplant and cellular therapy activities in the department of medicine and other departments, as well as develop a joint research program for stem cell transplant and cellular therapies.
Giralt — a HemOnc Today Editorial Board Member — has made several key contributions to the field of bone marrow transplantation, including developing the use of reduced-intensity conditioning regimens for older or debilitated patients with hematologic malignancies.
Miguel-Angel Perales, MD, has been named chief of the adult bone marrow transplant service.
Perales, who previously served as deputy chief of the service, will help expand the development of the service and its clinical, research and educational programs.
Since joining Memorial Sloan Kettering, Perales — who also is director of the adult bone marrow transplantation fellowship program — has directed studies and monitored the immune systems of patients undergoing stem cell transplantation.
