ASH will posthumously honor former society President Stanley L. Schrier, MD, with this year’s Exemplary Service Award.
The award — to be presented in December at ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition — recognizes an individual whose outstanding service over several years significantly advanced the interests of the society.
Schrier, who died in August, formerly served as professor emeritus of medicine in hematology at Stanford School of Medicine.
“Dr. Schrier was an exemplary colleague, mentor, collaborator and physician whose impact transcends borders — from the United States and South America to Africa and Asia,” ASH President Roy L. Silverstein, MD, chairman of the department of medicine at Medical College of Wisconsin, said in a society-issued press release. “He has served as a dedicated volunteer for ASH’s global programs, never missing an opportunity to collaborate and enthusiastically sharing his expertise with colleagues all over the world. We value Dr. Schrier’s contributions to hematology and honor his decades of service.”
Schrier’s research interests in red cell biology led to a more than 20-year effort to understand the pathophysiology of the thalassemia.
He served as ASH president in 2004. He also was a founding member of the ASH-supported International Consortium on Acute Leukemia, a network of clinical investigators from North America, South America and Europe who collaborate to improve patient care.
