UCLA professor honored for contributions to lung cancer prevention

Denise Aberle, MD, received International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer’s Joseph W. Cullen Prevention/Early Detection Award.
The award — presented during the association’s World Conference on Lung Cancer, held in September in Barcelona — recognizes a scientist’s lifetime contributions to the prevention of lung cancer or other thoracic malignancies.
Aberle is vice chair for research in radiological sciences and researcher at UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as professor of radiology and bioengineering at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
She led the National Lung Screening Trial, which assessed whether imaging-based techniques could be effective for early detection of lung cancer.
The researchers determined low-dose CT scans significantly reduced lung cancer deaths among high-risk smokers, and the findings led to new lung cancer screening guidelines for individuals who meet certain age and smoking history criteria.
