Esther Obeng, MD, PhD, received the 2019 Gertrude B. Elion Cancer Research Award from American Association for Cancer Research.

The award supports early-career researchers with basic, translational or clinical research that focuses on the cause, diagnosis, treatment or prevention of cancer.

Obeng, assistant member of the department of oncology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, will present her research at next year’s AACR Annual Meeting.

Obeng’s research focuses on myelodysplastic syndrome. She is investigating how mutations associated with the disorder transform normal cells into cancer cells, with the goal of developing new treatments that are better tolerated.

Obeng received her undergraduate and doctorate degrees from University of Miami, and she received her medical degree from University of Miami School of Medicine.

She completed her internship at Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center, and she did a fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital.
