Mark E. Thompson, MD, has been appointed medical director for public policy with Community Oncology Alliance.

Thompson will continue to chair Community Oncology Alliance’s government affairs and policy committee, overseeing official positions and comments regarding public policy.

“[The alliance] has long demonstrated that policymaking is critical to community oncology patients, professionals and practices,” Thompson said in a press release. “This new position will add to [the alliance’s] capable and busy team keeping an eye on legislative affairs that impact the future of cancer care at all levels.

“Community oncology is at a crossroad,” Thompson added. “The many policy issues before legislators will determine not only how we care for patients, but, in some areas, if we will continue to care for patients. I am looking forward to working to preserve community-based cancer care for those who depend on it.”

Thompson spent more than 30 years as a practicing community oncologist with Mark H. Zangmeister Cancer Center in Columbus, Ohio, where he also served as president and managing partner. He has been an active member of Community Oncology Alliance since its inception, serving as president from 2013-2014.

“After many years of volunteering his valuable time and energy, we are pleased to have [Thompson] officially join the COA team,” Michael Diaz, MD, president of Community Oncology Alliance, said in the release. “The understanding of complex cancer care issues and policymaking he brings to the table are invaluable.”
