NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center earns Comprehensive Cancer Center designation
The NCI designated NYU Langone Health’s Perlmutter Cancer Center as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Only 50 cancer centers across the country have earned this distinction, the highest ranking awarded by NCI.
Comprehensive Cancer Center status requires institutions to meet high standards for cancer prevention, clinical services and research. The NCI evaluation process includes submission of a written grant and a site visit conducted by more than two dozen scientists from peer institutions.
“Over the past several years, NYU Langone Health and its Perlmutter Cancer Center have renewed and expanded its commitment to advancing cancer care,” Benjamin G. Neel, MD, PhD, professor of medicine and director of Perlmutter Cancer Center, said in a press release. “In doing so, [it] has achieved many important milestones, including strengthening our faculty, broadening our research portfolio — particularly in clinical and translational research — and improving patient care and quality standards. We are proud of what we have accomplished and gratified that our efforts have been rewarded with our elevation to NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center status.”
Comprehensive Cancer Center status will provide nearly $20 million in new funding for research programs, technology and infrastructure at Perlmutter Cancer Center. This will be a 51% increase from the center’s last Cancer Center Support Grant.
