Grace Lu-Yao, PhD, received the International Society of Geriatric Oncology 2018 Nursing and Allied Health Investigator Award, which recognizes research from new investigators in geriatric oncology nursing.

Lu-Yao, associate director of population science at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center – Jefferson Health, received the award for her abstract, “Relationship between polypharmacy status and health care utilization in geriatric oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy,” presented at the society’s annual conference this month.

The work is the largest population-based study to quantify health care use among geriatric oncology patients within 6 months of chemotherapy. Researchers described how the number of prescriptions patients used before chemotherapy affected their postchemotherapy use.

Lu-Yao joined Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center in 2016 and established the geriatric oncology research working group to develop clinical algorithms and interventions to improve geriatric oncology care. She also serves as vice chair of population science in the department of medical oncology and leads the transdisciplinary integration of population science at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, a means of integrating population science into five research programs at the cancer center.

Lu-Yao’s research has focused on cancer surveillance, screening and treatment for prostate cancer, raising awareness about overdiagnosis and overtreatment of the disease.
