Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center named nation’s best for pediatric cancer

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center has been named the best hospital in the nation for children with cancer.
The institution tops U.S. News & World Report’s list of best hospitals for pediatric cancer for 2018-2019.
The 12th annual Best Children’s Hospitals rankings are intended to help families of children with life-threatening or rare conditions obtain the best possible medical care.
The rankings highlight the top 50 centers in 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.
Other centers named to the top 10 for cancer care this year are Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, Children’s National Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.
This is the first time in eight years that Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center did not finish first or second in the cancer-specific rankings.
However, Boston Children’s topped the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll for the second straight year. The honor roll recognizes pediatric centers that deliver exceptionally high-quality care across multiple specialties. Boston Children’s ranked first in three of the 10 specialties assessed: neurology and neurosurgery, nephrology and orthopedics.
Other institutions in the top five of the honor roll are Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Texas Children’s Hospital and Children’s National Medical Center.
The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings take into account objective measurements such as clinical outcomes — including infection rates and mortality — as well as compliance with best practices and available clinical resources.
RTI International, a research and consulting firm in North Carolina, collected and analyzed data from children’s hospitals and also surveyed several thousand pediatric specialists. More than 100 experts — including medical directors and pediatric specialists — provided input through methodology working groups.
“Having a child who is born with or develops a serious illness is one of the most difficult situations a parent can face,” Ben Harder, chief of health Analysis at U.S. News, said in a press release. “Our Best Children’s Hospitals rankings are designed with parents and young patients in mind. By having access to the most comprehensive data available to supplement guidance from their pediatrician, families are able to make better-informed decisions about where to seek high-quality care for their children.”
