Gallo, MS, the association’s president elect; Jennie R. Crews, MD, MMM, FACP, the association’s immediate past president; and Mark S. Soberman, MD, MBA, FACS, the association’s president.

McAneny received the honor at the association’s National Oncology Conference in recognition of her pioneering work in value-based care.

McAneny — president-elect of the AMA — is cofounder and CEO of New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants Ltd., a multidisciplinary oncology practice. She also manages New Mexico Cancer Center, which provides outpatient medical and radiation oncology care and imaging in rural areas across the state.

Her efforts to develop the grant-funded COME HOME oncology medical home initiative reduced costs and improved care; helped to inform Medicare’s Oncology Care Model pilot; and supported physician practices in process changes critical to participation in value-based payment models, including those created under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act.

“It is a great honor to receive this ... award,” McAneny said in her acceptance speech. “This is an organization that brings together thousands of specialists from all areas of cancer care, from cancer centers and hospitals to private practices and academic centers. All of us have a common cause, which is taking care of cancer patients. So, to receive an award from an organization that has so many great people to choose from is one of the greatest honors of my life.”

McAneny will assume the AMA presidency in June. She will be the first oncologist to hold that position.
