Hematologists, oncologists elected to National Academy of Medicine

The National Academy of Medicine today announced the election of 70 regular members and 10 international members.

Election to the academy — considered one of the highest honors in health and medicine — recognizes individuals who demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

“These newly elected members represent the most exceptional scholars and leaders in science, medicine, and health in the U.S. and around the globe,” Victor J. Dzau, MD, president of National Academy of Medicine, said in an academy-issued press release. “Their expertise will help our organization address today’s most pressing health challenges and inform the future of health and health care to benefit us all. I am honored to welcome these distinguished individuals to the National Academy of Medicine.”

The academy now has 2,127 members, including 172 international members.

Newly elected members who specialize in fields related to hematology and oncology include:

  • Scott Allen Armstrong, MD, PhD, chair of the department of pediatric oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; associate chief of the division of hematology/oncology at Boston Children’s Hospital; and David G. Nathan professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School;
  • Howard Y. Chang, MD, PhD, professor of dermatology and director of Center for Personal Dynamic Regulomes at Stanford University School of Medicine;
  • Lewis A. Chodosh, MD, PhD, professor and chair of the department of cancer biology; professor of medicine; associate director for basic science at Abramson Cancer Center; and co-director of 2-PREVENT Translational Center of Excellence at Perelman School of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania;
  • Benjamin F. Cravatt, PhD, professor and co-chair of the department of molecular medicine at The Scripps Research Institute;
  • Alan D. D’Andrea, MD, Fuller-American Cancer Society professor in the department of medical oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School;
  • V. Craig Jordan, OBE, PhD, DSc, FMedSci, FAACR, Dallas/Ft. Worth Living Legend chair of cancer research, professor of breast medical oncology, and professor of molecular and cellular oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center;
  • Ramon E. Parsons, MD, PhD, director of Tisch Cancer Institute; and professor and chair of the department of oncological sciences at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai;
  • Martin Pomper, MD, PhD, Henry N. Wagner Jr. professor of radiology in the department of radiology and radiological science at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine;
  • John H. Sampson, MD, PhD, MHSc, MBA, distinguished professor of neurosurgery and chair of the department of neurosurgery at Duke University Medical Center;
  • Viviane Tabar, MD, member and vice chair of the department of neurosurgery; and director of Multidisciplinary Skull Base and Pituitary Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; and
  • Suzanne L. Topalian, MD, professor of surgery and oncology, as well as associate director of Bloomberg-Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
