The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has retained its distinction as the No. 1 cancer hospital in the country.

MD Anderson tops U.S. News & World Report’s 2017-2018 Best Hospitals rankings for cancer care, released this morning.

"This recognition from U.S. News & World Report is a reminder that patients are at the center of all we do now and all we envision for the future," Stephen Hahn, MD, deputy president and chief operating officer at MD Anderson, said in a press release. "Our mission is bold, but it’s through innovative care, research, education and prevention that we will fulfill our promise to end cancer. It’s what we strive for every day."

This is the third straight year — and the 13th time in 16 years — that MD Anderson has ranked first. The institution has finished first or second in cancer care every year since the publication began issuing its rankings in 1990.

"To consistently be recognized for the quality and compassionate cancer care we provide patients who come to MD Anderson seeking our innovative approaches, world-renowned expertise and decades of experience is a true honor," Marshall Hicks, MD, president ad interim of MD Anderson, said in the release. "This ranking recognizes the passion of our 20,000 extraordinary employees and 1,000 volunteers for serving our patients and realizing our mission to end cancer. We are grateful, honored and proud to be the top-ranked cancer center in this national survey."

The 28th annual U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings are intended to help patients with rare or life-threatening conditions make informed decisions about where to receive care.

The top 10 cancer hospitals in this year’s rankings are: The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota; Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center; Seattle Cancer Care Alliance/University of Washington Medical Center; Johns Hopkins Hospital; Cleveland Clinic; Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania — Penn Presbyterian; H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute; and UCSF Medical Center.

Mayo Clinic ranked first in this year’s Honor Roll, which highlights 20 hospitals that deliver exceptional treatment across multiple areas of care. This is the second straight year Mayo Clinic topped the Honor Roll. Other institutions in the Honor Roll top five are Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and UCSF Medical Center.

This year’s U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list ranks hospitals in 16 specialties: cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; geriatrics; gynecology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; ophthalmology; orthopedics; pulmonology; psychiatry; rehabilitation; rheumatology; and urology.

The rankings — which compare more than 4,500 medical centers across the country — are based primarily on objective measures, such as risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates; volume; patient experience; patient safety; and quality of nursing.

“Covering nearly every hospital in every U.S. community, U.S. News offers deep, rich data that patients can use to help them make informed decisions about where to receive surgical or medical care,” Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News, said in a press release. “We know outcomes matter most, which is why U.S. News is committed to publishing as much data as possible on patient outcomes.”

This year, 152 hospitals were nationally ranked in at least one specialty.

The publication also released regional rankings that recognized hospitals by state and metro area based on how well they performed complex and common care.

In 2007, U.S. News & World Report began issuing its list of best children’s hospitals. In June, the publication named St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as the best in the nation for children with cancer.
