Barbara L. McAneny, MD, an oncologist in New Mexico, has been chosen president-elect of the AMA.

Barbara L. McAneny

McAneny — who will assume the association’s presidency in June 2018 — is co-founder and CEO of New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants Ltd., a multidisciplinary oncology practice. She also manages New Mexico Cancer Center, which provides outpatient medical and radiation oncology care and imaging in rural areas across New Mexico.

“It is a deep honor and privilege to be elected a leader of an organization that is committed to serving as a strong physician voice and a dedicated patient advocate,” McAneny said in an association–issued press release. “The AMA will play a pivotal role in the changing health care environment as our nation confronts pressing health care issues. With vision and perseverance, I look forward to creating a brighter future for patients and the medical profession.”

McAneny joined the AMA board since 2010, and she served as chair from 2016 to 2016.

She previously served as ASCO’s delegate to AMA. She has held several other leadership roles, including president of the New Mexico Medical Society and president of the New Mexico chapter of the American College of Physicians.
