CHICAGO — A “very interesting abstract” presented at the ASCO Annual Meeting shows an increase in lumpectomies and a decrease in mastectomies following the release of a Society of Surgical Oncology–American Society for Radiation Oncology consensus guideline.

Douglas Yee, MD, director of the Masonic Cancer Center, professor of medicine and pharmacology at University of Minnesota, and a HemOnc Today Editorial Board member, discusses the study and the potential impact of the findings.

The results show that “a very simple tool … can actually change the way women receive care for their primary breast cancer,” Yee said.
