Oncology Nursing Society to present excellence award

The award — which will be presented at the society’s annual congress in May — includes a plaque, a $500 monetary prize and travel support to the congress.

Laszewski is clinical leader of radiation at Barbara Karmanos Cancer Institute. She has worked as an oncology nurse for 28 years, including the past 19 at Karmanos.

“I am very pleased to receive this distinguished award and for what it represents — excellence in nursing,” Laszewski said in a press release. “I’ve dedicated many years to caring for patients, and it’s my privilege to care for Karmanos’ patients. I am truly humbled to be selected for this award.”

Laszewski serves as president of the Detroit Oncology Nursing Society. She also has led a research venture that has assessed how patients with head and neck cancers or breast cancer adhere to prescribed skin care while they undergo radiation therapy.

Clara Beaver, MSN, RN, AOCNS, ACNS-BC, manager of patient care services in the ambulatory clinics at Karmanos, nominated Laszewski for the award.

“Pamela is respected as a leader and expert in radiation oncology,” Beaver said in the press release. “She is often called upon to assist with education of staff, policy writing, [and] setting nursing and documentation standards. Her input is valued not only by nursing staff, but also physicians and other professionals in radiation oncology.”
