Thomas Gajewski, MD, PhD, has been awarded an Outstanding Investigator Award by the National Cancer Institute.

The award, which guarantees $600,000 in direct costs per year for 7 years, is designed to provide increased financial stability to exceptional researchers. This encourages researchers to explore long-term projects with great potential that otherwise would not be feasible.

“It allows funded investigators to take greater risks and be more adventurous in their research,” Gajewski said in a press release. “We can now focus entirely on doing the work and worry less about writing grant applications, making us more productive and efficient.”

Gajewski is director of the immunology and cancer program at University of Chicago Medicine. He also serves as professor in University of Chicago’s department of medicine and Ben May Cancer Institute.

Gajewski’s team investigates ways to overcome tumor resistance to immunotherapy, as well as correlations between gut microbiota composition and the immune system’s response to cancer.
