Wistar Institute scientist receives grant for metastatic breast cancer research

The PA Breast Cancer Coalition presented a $50,000 grant to Qihong Huang, MD, PhD, to fund his research related to metastatic breast cancer.

“Funding from the PA Breast Cancer Coalition is extremely important to the future of breast cancer research,” Huang, assistant professor in tumor microenvironment and metastasis program at The Wistar Institute, said in a press release. “Our hope, with the help of this grant, is to change the way we treat breast cancer metastasis and to learn more about why the disease recurs in some patients and not others.”

Huang’s team discovered a brain-specific protein, GABRA3, that has FDA–approved inhibitors available. GABRA3 could play a critical role in metastasis and serve as a potential therapeutic target in breast cancer.

“This grant is critical,” Huang added. “We are grateful for this opportunity to test our theories and their effects on new therapies for metastatic breast cancer.”

The PA Breast Cancer Coalition will award $150,000 in grants this year. The coalition has awarded more than 90 grants worth over $3 million since 1997.
